First Impressions!!

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. I tell everyone that no matter if you are doing a Telephone or a Face to Face Interview you must always bring your "A" game.

The first impression can be something as how you shake hands or perhaps you email address.

Everything you do is a direct reflection of how you are precieved as professional. Always remeber you must make a positive and lasting impression on everyone you meet.

I hope this short but powerful piece of information is helpful.

How many resumes?

Many of the candidates I meet only have one version of there resume. I have found that this is not always the wisest course of action. Based on my experience if you are applying for example a management position then your resume needs to be tailored to your audience. The first thing a person needs to do is decide what type of resume you want to make: Perhaps a Traditional Chronological Resume or perhaps a chrono functional resume would be better. Secondly you need to make the resume to fit the audience you are talking to. For Example the size of the company, industry, etc. Third and final decision is what resume format to have. Every person needs to have a Electronic and a Print resumes. The days of FAXING resume are OVER. Please pass that little fact along.

When is the best time to look for a new job?

As an executive recruiter I am asked this question more often as the year is progressing. From my experience one of the best time to look for a job is around the holidays.

Throughout the year the number of people looking new opportunities increases during the first part of the year and stays steady throughout the summer.

If you could pick a perfect time to search I would say the holidays work best because the number of people willing to make a change in very low. Reasons why may be obvious and some may not.

Obvious: Financially why interrupt your income unless you must. Travel plans are already made. Parties and festivities are already planned.

Not so obvious: People think they have to start during the holidays. Not always true because you can interview (less competition) and you can start during the first part of the year.

10 Reasons to Not Accept a Counter Offer

1. Think about where you work where it takes you wanting to resign before they want to pay you what you are worth.

2. Where is the money coming from? Most companies have strict guidelines on Compensation.

3. Your company will immediately start looking for another person at a cheaper price.

4. You have now made your employer aware that you are unhappy. From this day your loyalty will always be in question.

5. Promotion time comes around and your employer remembers who they think is loyal.

6. When times get tough your employer will begin to make cuts and you could be the first.

7. The reason that you were looking in the first place will repeat themselves in the future.

8. Statistics show that if you accept a counteroffer the probability of your voluntarily leaving or being let go within one year are greater than 90%.

9. A counter offer should be viewed as an insult.

10. When the word gets out your co-workers could begin to view you
differently.

Job Getting Secrets #8

You interview is over and now comes the waiting. One of the first thing you should do when you interview is complete now you need to send a thank you letter to the person or people that interviewed you.

In the age of technology it is easy to send an email. I recommend a hand written note. This shows the people that interviewed that you care enough to invest the time to write the note.

In the thank you letter you should cover:
  • Highlighted portions of the conversation that were valuable to the hiring manager.
  • Recap on the HOT Topics that were covered.
  • Share your level of enthusiasm and interest in joining the team.

Getting a Job Secret #7

If you want to make a good impression during the interview proces you then you need to be prepared.

I'm not just saying what you are going to say during the interview to sell yourself but just as important are the questions you are going to ask at the end of the interview:

How would you describe the company culture?

Can you tell me about the Day in the Life in this role?

What is the vision of the organization?

What are some of the biggest challenges I will face in this role?

Getting a job Secret #6

GREAT you followed my advice and have secured your first interview.

Here are a few things to remember when you are interviewing:

Tip #1 When you are being interviewed remember to only talk about your experiences that relate to the position that you are being interviewed for.

For Example if you did over a million dollars in Sales at your last company that is great. But more importantly you need to explain how you can do it at your new company.

Tip #2 When you are interviewing you need to Sell yourself. You need to always show the interviewing on how you add value to the organization. Remember people always care about What In It For Them (WIFM)

Hope these Tips Are Helpful!!!!

Getting a Job Secret #5

If you want to attract the perfect job one of the key ingredients is to remove the negative "the sky is falling" people.

Forget all of the talk that NO-ONE is hiring. The are always organizations that are looking for TOP Talent to join there organizations across this country.

Even know there have been Millions of people out of work the reality is that not many buisness closed there doors. They simply learned how to do more with less.

Another key ingredient to never rely on only once source to find your next job. You must network with friends, family, co-workers, ex-coworkers and everyone you meet. You must build your own personal brand.

By combining multiple sources and techniques you give yourself and extremly competative edge over your competition.

Getting a job Secret #4

Know your Audience!
After all of the work of applying for your new job and the endless hours spent filling out online applications you are now ready for the INTERVIEW.

Every company is different. The type of interviews are just as different as the person conducting the interview session.

Do your research on the organization. Know some of the key events that are planned as well what has happened in the past.

Use the power of Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc.. to found out as much as possible about the people who will be interviewing you.

Rule of thumb: An interview is not to see if you can do the job. It is a information and connection session.

Connect with you future colleagues.

Getting Job Secret #3

I am going to tell you something that may upset you.

READY?

The is a 90% chance that your resume will never get looked at. Notice I did not say skimmed over and then thrown away. I said NEVER get looked at.

Want to know why?

Simple.....An interview with one client sums it up the best................

"Honestly I care more about the cover letter than I do the resume. A resume is a list of bullet points but a properly done cover letter can illustrate many things. A cover letter says the candidate read the job decription and was able to illustrate in written form an understanding of the position".

There are many components of getting your next job, however if you can't get past the first step then you will may never be able to articulate other features that make you the best fit for the organization.

This little secret has to show that you are CRYSTAL CLEAR about the Exact job that you desire.

The problem is that most people will "settle" for something that is "close enough" but that is not really what someone wants.

  • You have imagined the day to day activities and company functions.

Write down specifically what you MUST HAVE and Things that you would like to have.
